Film Opening Research #1- The Barbie Movie

 

  1. how many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? 3
  2. what images are prioritized in the opening sequence? The sunset and the desert setting where the young girls are playing with the dolls to show the sense of nostalgia and imagination. 
  3. what connotations do the images carry? They are conveying the nostalgia from the dolls and it critiquing the normal society. The images carrying memories of childhood and the creativity with play. It includes the ideal versions of homes, fashion, and friendships, creating a dreamlike quality that celebrates the joy of imagination. The nostalgia that is portrayed in the scene connects to audiences with the character and the brand, while also highlighting the importance of play in shaping identity.
  4. how is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? It is reinforced by the color palette and the character design of each barbie. In the scene, they use bright and saturated colors that emphasize the fantasy and whimsical genre. Each character is designed to show that women can be anything. Barbie and other characters are created with fashionable outfits that symbolize traditional femininity and aspirational lifestyles. This aligns with the film's exploration of identity and societal norms, while also anchoring it within the fantasy genre, where characters often embody realistic traits
  5. how does the film establish an enigma [mystery] from the outset? They create a mystery in the intro by comparing the ideal world to a realistic lifestyle. The vibrant colors and perfect world of Barbie creates a feeling of joy and happiness. However, there is little hints, like odd behaviors of the characters that create a sense of curiosity. This contrast builds questions of this "perfect" world and what is really happening. 
  6. what strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? I believe that strategies like vibrant visuals, relatable characters, music, and a family friendly aspect can appeal to its target audience.
  7. how has technology been used effectively? In the intro, they have multiple transitions and CGI to create the fantasy of the Barbie world. This can enhance the magical elements and portray the fun pace of the movie. It can help the audience be more engaged and have fun while viewing the movie.

Mood Board

  On my mood board, I put dark colors, abandoned houses, and woods. This serves as inspiration to our film by showing the mood and setting of our film and how we are planning to accomplish this opening. I worked with a group and we all made our own mood boards but I picked out the woods pictures and color theme of our film.

Editing

  This week, our primary focus was on the editing process, which is one of the most challenging aspects of our project since it could determine our entire film. It was my first time ever editing a major project like this, but youtube and peers helped me with using Canva to put out film together and come to life. We reviewed all the trimmed videos we went through and added sound elements to make sure met our expectations before shifting our attention to transitions. We incorporated various transitions between clips to avoid abrupt cuts, utilizing techniques such as fades, dissolves, and swipes to enhance the film's visual appeal and fluidity. This addition effectively addressed the flow issue we identified last week and was crucial for improving the opening sequence.  Additionally, we established our studio name, BAR Films, which combines the initials of our names: Bella (short for Isabella), Ashley, and Ryleigh.
